ApplePay in China

Travelers beware. ApplePay backed by credit cards issued from foreign banks may not work at many places in China. Those merchants would only honor ApplePay backed by domestic credit cards.

Traveled on a Fokker 100 aircraft

It’s been almost 2 decades since I last traveled on a Fokker aircraft. On 6/4/18 connecting flight in Zurich, I was surprised to find this Fokker 100 on duty.

It’s not cheap living in Shanghai

Living expenses became higher year over year for the past 10 years since I started the company in Shanghai. I just paid 14 rmb (over $2) for a muffin of this size.

On the other hand, business has been quite robust so I guess I shouldn’t complain too much.

Global Warming not felt today locally in Shanghai

It’s snowing. Though Shanghai isn’t cold enough for snow to accumulate significantly on the ground, it’s nonetheless among the coldest winters since I arrived 10 years ago.

This morning near Century Park:

Just now outside of my office window:

Finally, Airplane Mode on Chinese Carriers

The country’s aviation authorities approved earlier this week use of personal devices on airplane mode on Chinese carriers. Some airlines, including China Eastern, has since implemented it. I no longer need to completely switch off my smart phone when flying. I welcome this change, though years late compared to carriers from most other countries.

Hello, electronic books, I no longer need to carry a separate Kindle for you.

New Year’s Eve Shanghai Air Quality Index

Revelers beware. The image says it all. China is doing almost everything impressively, only if they’d prioritize improving air quality, too.

P.S. I think the 824 reading is caused by machine malfunctioning, but other lower readings-still very bad, should be real.

Hardworking Chinese people

It’s 6:30 am and I was awoken by the clanking noise from the construction site opposing my hotel room in Huai’an city.

If anyone’s wondering about why China has been growing so rapidly, there’re so many hints including the dedicated workers that begin the day so early.

What a treat, listening to ‘Que Sera Sera’

First of all, you need to be my age to know to appreciate this song. It’s not the tune, but the lyrics that touch me.

I’m in China Eastern Airlines Pudong Airport lounge waiting for my flight for Shenzhen to attend CIOE trade show (I wrote about the show a year ago.) The background music in the lounge  is Que Sera Sera and it reminds me of the long forgotten favorite song.

I’m too occupied listening to write any longer.

Hidden little gem in Taipei airport TPE

I prefer using Singapore Airlines lounge when taking a Star Alliance flight out of Taipei, even though this is the home airport of Eva Airways’-a fellow Star Alliance member.

Most Star Alliance passengers probably opt for Eva lounges, leaving Singapore Airlines lounge relatively quiet. The food here doesn’t have as many varieties, but the quality is definitely among the best airport lounges’ I’ve had. I like this less known lounge a lot. I’m flying Eva this afternoon to return to Shanghai, but I still opt for Singapore Airlines lounge. That’s how much I prefer it.

I know my way around airports.

In China, too many good things …

I wrote a couple months ago about ride-sharing bicycles in China-the user can drop off the bicycle anywhere on the sidewalk to return, while the next rider simply picks up from wherever he/she finds the available bicycle. At that time, I thought it a very convenient product. Not anymore. See in the following picture where the crosswalk ends. Too many ride-sharing bicycles parked randomly has been causing inconvenience to pedestrians.
